Diabetes Basics – What are gutted mitochondria?
What are gutted mitochondria?
Mitochondria (mitos for short) are cellular structures which generate most of the cell’s ATP (adenosine triphosphate) energy currency.* This earns them the designation of “cellular power plants.” This designation, which I also used before I recognized its inappropriatenessCis not optimal. Mitos are involved in a broad range of other cellular processes, including signaling, cellular growth differentiation, the control of the cell life cycle, and cell death. Structurally, mitos have shelves (cristae) upon which reside cascades of enzymes that perform essential mitos functions. I visualize grease buildup on mitos as gutting of these shelves
